Nice thread title. The lyrics of Rammstein actually offer more than one would think at first. Especially the ones which are not that popular like Alter Mann or Kokain. You might even use Rammstein as a gateway to German poetry if you take a look at Till Lindemann's books. There are a lot of multiple meanings, puns, and other aspects that make Rammstein interesting linguistically and musically. Du Hast is only the tip of the iceberg in that respect. My favorite Rammstein wordplay is the opening to Wo bist du? They completely change the meaning of the sentence five times just by adding a few words to the end each time, relying on the multiple meanings of various words and phrases in German.
Could you please explain how does the meaning changes? I started to learn german a month ago and I've been going pretty good so far with it, I understand just fine the meaning of each sentence but I fail to see the wordplay or whatever is going on with the first few lines. I am a native spanish speaker and I know english, and french so if anybody has a similar example in any of those other languages it would be cool too.
The verb in the als -clause is omitted, so the tense is assumed to be present like the main verb. Therefore, als very clearly means when in this phrase. This very cleverly changes not just the meaning but the syntax of the sentence by just adding a single adverb. It's pretty brilliant. There's actually quite a bit of substance to that song. If you weren't aware, it's about sex tourism Westerners going to Southeast Asia to bang underage prostitutes , which is obviously a pretty big problem perpetrated by some Europeans.
It fits in with the other anti-misogyny and social-issue songs on the album.
It's not a cover song, but was released together with "Das Modell" in which indeed was a cover original by Kraftwerk. On the same single they also released "Alter Mann". The Folk Metal subgenre is really big in Germany for some reason. In Extremo usually sings in German but they do have at least one song in Swedish, one in Gaelic, and one in Occitan.
If you wanna look up a song of theirs you could do "Labyrinth" or "Augen Auf". The Communion After Dark podcast also has some other artists that have only German lyrics. Or maybe try "Die Apokaliptischen Reiter". I never knew of this movement.
